The Public Internet Workspace: Concept and Realization
> 3. Abstract
It appears that the simple provision of "just another
internetcafe" which then is running on free software and
for free, has produced a certain level of burnout in some
groups engaged in promoting community computing resources.
Even where that is not the case, the provision of more
wide-ranging facilities could be interesting.
Purpose of this event, is to discuss the proposed concept
of a public internet workspace: A location where people can
conduct online work for political campaigning, actions,
the maintainance of their webpage or simply as the possibly
only way to do things with computers and online at all.
The idea is to supercede the concept of the public, free
internet cafe, to provide people with a facility where they
can become regular users with their own account data and
preferences stored globally and also safely.
A campaign center away from your NGO or an office away from
home.
The ways how to best do that in both technical terms and terms
of social interaction with visitors shall be the point of
this event. In it's course, the intention is to begin with
an outline of the idea and introduce proposed technical
solutions.
Those solutions, and the way how to relate them with the social
context are then put to discussion between the participants.
